Field Trip to Mountains

 DON'T FORGET

We have an ALL-DAY field trip coming up...
MAY 15TH, 2020
7am-5pm
Please be ON-TIME, as we are all riding together and getting an early start is important for harvesting.
Are you ready?! It's HARVEST TIME!!

Harvest time is the most important time of year for weavers. We cannot buy our materials in a store or online,... we must harvest them by hand each and every year, for the following year.
As a weaver, we must always think ahead and prepare for the future.

AGENDA
  • 7:00am ------------------Meet at Hibulb Cultural Center & Natural History Preserve.
  • 7:30am ------------------Leave HCC&NHP.
  • 8:30am ------------------Arrive at harvest site in mountains.
  • 8:45am ------------------Circle up and go over Cultural and safety protocols.
  • 9:00-11:30am ----------Pulling bark from trees, separating outer bark from inner bark.
  • 12:00-1:00pm -----------LUNCH (lunch and water will be provided)
  •  1:00-3:00pm ----------Pulling bark from trees, separating outer bark from inner bark.
  •  3:00-4:00pm ------------Clean up and washing cedar in river/stream.
  • 4:00pm ----------------------Leave mountains.
  • 5:00pm ----------------------Get back to HCC&NHP

Your goal:
  • Harvest five bundles of Cedar, per student.
  • Bundles must be at least 5 inches wide and at least 10 feet long.  (They can be wider or longer if you can manage it.)
  • MUST HAVE ALL OUTER BARK REMOVED. No red skin or patches of bark left on bundles. Bugs can get under bark and eat away at your cedar during the curing process.

What will you need?
  • Jeans or long pants
  • Coat or Hoodie
  • Long-sleeve button down shirt
  • Hat or scarf to cover your Head
  • Bug spray
  • Refillable water/drink container
  • Snacks (optional)
*If you plan on bringing your children, family or friends, you will need to drive your own vehicle and bring lunch for them. We will have enough water for any extras but, the budget only allows food for 15 students. You will still be required to show up on-time and stay the entire day.
**We will be let in through a locked gate, so you will need to go IN and OUT the same time we do.

"I am really looking forward to getting up to the mountains with you all... I hope you enjoy our time up there and I pray we have a bountiful harvest." - Ms. Gobin
