Field Trip to Mountains

 DON'T FORGET

We have an ALL-DAY field trip coming up...
MAY 15TH, 2020
7am-5pm
Please be ON-TIME, as we are all riding together and getting an early start is important for harvesting.
Are you ready?! It's HARVEST TIME!!

Harvest time is the most important time of year for weavers. We cannot buy our materials in a store or online,... we must harvest them by hand each and every year, for the following year.
As a weaver, we must always think ahead and prepare for the future.

AGENDA
  • 7:00am ------------------Meet at Hibulb Cultural Center & Natural History Preserve.
  • 7:30am ------------------Leave HCC&NHP.
  • 8:30am ------------------Arrive at harvest site in mountains.
  • 8:45am ------------------Circle up and go over Cultural and safety protocols.
  • 9:00-11:30am ----------Pulling bark from trees, separating outer bark from inner bark.
  • 12:00-1:00pm -----------LUNCH (lunch and water will be provided)
  •  1:00-3:00pm ----------Pulling bark from trees, separating outer bark from inner bark.
  •  3:00-4:00pm ------------Clean up and washing cedar in river/stream.
  • 4:00pm ----------------------Leave mountains.
  • 5:00pm ----------------------Get back to HCC&NHP

Your goal:
  • Harvest five bundles of Cedar, per student.
  • Bundles must be at least 5 inches wide and at least 10 feet long.  (They can be wider or longer if you can manage it.)
  • MUST HAVE ALL OUTER BARK REMOVED. No red skin or patches of bark left on bundles. Bugs can get under bark and eat away at your cedar during the curing process.

What will you need?
  • Jeans or long pants
  • Coat or Hoodie
  • Long-sleeve button down shirt
  • Hat or scarf to cover your Head
  • Bug spray
  • Refillable water/drink container
  • Snacks (optional)
*If you plan on bringing your children, family or friends, you will need to drive your own vehicle and bring lunch for them. We will have enough water for any extras but, the budget only allows food for 15 students. You will still be required to show up on-time and stay the entire day.
**We will be let in through a locked gate, so you will need to go IN and OUT the same time we do.

"I am really looking forward to getting up to the mountains with you all... I hope you enjoy our time up there and I pray we have a bountiful harvest." - Ms. Gobin

Hello Artists...

Please take some time to watch these videos... all are focused on the Coast Salish Culture and highlight some of my favorite Coast Salish Artists.

Some of these artists, like Qwalsius, Tsi'li'xw Bill James, Matika Wilbur and Judy Gobin (my mother) you will have a chance to meet during this semester, through in class lectures, artists studio visits and workshops.

After watching all these videos, I would like you to write a one page reflection paper one Contemporary Coast Salish Artist... you can find more of their work online if you do a simple google search or click on the links I have provided. I encourage you to do your own research to learn more about the artist you chose.

Also, please think of at least two questions for each artist featured, as you will get a chance to meet some of them this semester.

First Friday Gathering

Hello Artists,

For our first class (the first Friday of May), we will have a gathering here in class and then a field trip. We will be attending the "Freemont First Friday Art Walk" located in downtown Seattle.

Please, meet up in our classroom (Room 420) at Hibulb Culture Center & Natural History Preserve. We will start off with "Circle Up" where we will share something with one another, whether it be through story, song, dance, poetry, etc., and we will end with prayer before we leave. So be prepared, because everyone must share something at "Circle Up", even if it's just how you are feeling that day.

Also, I will be providing a hearty meal and refreshments before we leave for Seattle, so, come hungry. There will be healthy snacks and refreshments for the ride home as well.

Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes, a raincoat/umbrella a smartphone/camera for taking photos and spending money (not mandatory).

Who: All students enrolled in Coast Salish Art 101 must attend. First Friday gatherings are mandatory.

What: Freemont First Friday Art Walk

Where: Meet in our classroom at HCC&NHP Room 420,
(transportation to Seattle will be provided, we will all ride together in the Tribal vans.)

When: 1pm-8pm
*Since this class will run much later than our normal classtime, please, make whatever arrangements necessary to attend.

Why: I want you to see all the various art styles that Coast Salish people create, because not all Coast Salish artists are "traditional" a lot of Coast Salish artists are doing very contemporary work. You will notice a lot of Northern style coastal art, but your goal is to make sure you find only works made by Coast Salish people.

You will be split up into groups of three and your group goal will be to find and take photographs of at least 6 works of art made by Coast Salish Artists, from at least 3 different Galleries or booths.

Your group assignment will be:
-Create a quick powerpoint using the photos of the 6 works of art your group has chose from First Friday Art Walk and present it to the class.
-Each slide much include artist name, date, title of piece, medium (materials used).
-Everyone in your group must present.

You will have one class period to work together on your presentations and the following class you will be presenting your powerpoint to the class and guest artists.

Welcome

Hello Artists and Welcome to my Edublog...

My name is Toni Jo Gobin, you can call me Ms. Gobin, or by my first name, whichever you prefer.

This Edublog was created to facilitate this Coast Salish Art 101 course. Please, take some time to go over the syllabus and be sure to purchase the required books and supplies needed for this course as soon as possible.

Our class will meet twice a week on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1pm- 4pm in classroom 420 at the Hibulb Cultural Center  & Natural History Preserve.

We will cover a lot in throughout this semester and attendance is vital to your success in this class and as an emerging artist. After we kick off our semester with First Friday and student presentations, we will learn about what has given life to Northwest Coast people for centuries, the Cedar Tree. You will learn when, where and how to harvest Cedar Bark, then how to prepare it for weaving. Almost all of our projects will involve Cedar.

Projects you will be expected to produce this semester will be :
  1. Harvest Cedar Bark Bundles (at least 2)
  2. Cedar Headband
  3. Cedar Dance Apron
  4. Dancing Shawl
  5. Ribbon Skirt
  6. Cedar Babyboard
  7. Cedar Paper (at least 3 sheets)
  8. Screen Print on Cedar Paper
  9. Cedar Roses (at least 10)
  10. Cedar Cordage Necklace
We will have Final Critique and Art Show in the HCC&NHP Art Gallery at the end of the semester, where you will get a chance to showcase your work and share with your family and friends. This will be a great opportunity to network with other emerging artists, established artists, possible clients and collectors.

This class with be productive and we will have a blast creating beautiful works of wearable Coast Salish art.

I hope you have fun, learn and share,... because my weaving teacher always told me,
"You are learning this to keep it alive, so share it, teach others so it doesn't die."-Anna Jefferson

 t'igwićid (thank you),

Toni Jo Gobin
